The unique TherAdapt Wheelchair Platform Rocker allows people who require the use of a wheelchair to experience the benefits of rocking right from their own wheelchair! Research has shown that stimulating the vestibular system in a controlled manner through rocking has many benefits. It can decrease self-stimulation, decrease hypersensitivity, improve postural security, improve concentration and attentiveness, increase balance, increase body awareness, have generalized calming effects, and reduce abnormal muscle tone.
TherAdapt has designed 2 different platforms Active and Easy to meet the specific needs and goals of the user. The two rockers are made of Baltic Birch and feature easy entry/exit from the platform via the rear ramp. A pair of adjustable front caster stops are used to center the wheelchair on the platform for optimal use of the rockers. Two securing straps are provided to "tie down" the wheelchair to the platform for safety.
The Active Wheelchair Platform Rocker was designed for users who strongly seek sensory input through rocking, tend to rock vigorously, or use a wheelchair with a long base (such as a reclining wheelchair). The longer, flatter arc of this platform requires more force to be used to create the rocking motion. This Rocker is for users with good balance and good upper body strength that would benefit from the calming effects of rocking and the opportunity for physical activity.
The Easy Wheelchair Platform Rocker has a flatter curve and is for users looking for the calming, gentle sensory effects of rocking. It is ideal for the geriatric population and individuals with sensory or balance deficits, as little effort is required to "make it go."
Our growing understanding of the vestibular system and sensory integration have led researchers to study the effects of slow, repetitive, rhythmic movement of the body. It has been found that this type of movement promotes brain development in children and is especially important for children with special needs who may have limited opportunities to create this movement experience for themselves. Gentle, slow rhythmic rocking is one of the best, early activities you can provide to help young children build foundations for balance and body awareness. Rocking also triggers a calming effect in the parasympathetic nervous system and can help attenuate self-stimulatory behaviors. For older adults with mid-stage dementia who are particularly difficult to calm, rocking is known to release endorphins, which helps reduce anxiety improving overall health and well-being. It has been found that children as well as adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and attention deficit disorder (ADD) are able to focus better when on a rocking chair. This is because the individual's need to keep moving is fulfilled by the rocking of the chair and they can concentrate better. According to a clinical study of a clientele with a loss of autonomy, frequent use of a rocking chair improved balance and blood circulation, reduced muscle pain, anxiety and depression. Rocking also provides a gentle form of mild exercise.
Note: The Platform Rockers are designed for use with Manual Wheelchairs ONLY. Wheelchair is sold separately.
