The TherAdapt School Chair is a simple, durable seating solution for children who require more postural support than a standard classroom chair or play table chair can provide. It has been designed for children with mild to moderate physical impairment. The School Chair offers a high degree of adjustability to accommodate growth or to meet the needs of several students in a multi-user environment. The modular design with accessories allows the chair to be easily customized to the individual needs of the user. In the multi-user environment, these accessories are easily attached or removed as needed.

The TherAdapt School Chair comes standard with a 1 in. adjustable pelvic positioning belt with a side release buckle. Double slotted rings on each side of the pelvic strap allow the loose ends of the strap to be threaded through which prevents the strap from slipping. The padded slip-resistant seat is adjustable for height and depth. All adjustments are made using pre-drilled holes and a stem bolt with hand tightened knob assembly. The school chair comes standard in the flat seat position but can be adjusted to allow the front of the seat to be 10 degrees below the back of the seat to encourage an anterior tilt of the pelvis and help facilitate greater independence in sit to stand transfers.

The TherAdapt School Chair is available in 3 sizes- Preschool/Primary (Model 100), Primary/Intermediate ( Model 200), and Intermediate (Model 300). Each size is available in 3 widths- Standard, Wide and X-Wide. The Wide and X-Wide Chairs are reinforced with a steel support bracket under the seat. Other Optional Accessories that can be added include the ButterFly Kit – which is a chest harness that provides anterior chest support; the Tray* and/ or Side Pads* that can narrow the width of the seat and provide support for positioning of the pelvis and upper legs (*Both of these Optional Accessories come with Arm Rests required for their attachment to the chair) and Arm Rests alone. The adjustability of the optional accessories also allows for the reconfiguration of support as the child builds postural strength and endurance and can maintain postural control for longer periods of time with less assistance.

Standard Features Include

• Mobile Option – The Mobile Base Kit with locking castor wheels enables the caregiver to push the child in the chair or the chair alone from one location to another, a huge benefit in classrooms with multiple stations for learning. The Mobile Base Kit provides all the benefits found in the Adjustable Footplate-Low, with the functionality of a mobile base. The addition of the Mobile Base Kit will raise the chair 3in. off the floor. The Mobile Base Kit is not compatible with Footplates, High or Low.
• Add Laterals – Choosing to add laterals means you will receive a slotted Support Back complete with a back pad, adjustable height and width lateral trunk pads, and a chest strap with Velcro closure. This back can be retrofitted to all previously purchased School Chairs by simply removing the standard padded back and replacing it with this new back. This back provides added support for children who have difficulty maintaining a stable midline posture. With the high degree of height and width adjustability, support can be gradually decreased by moving lateral supports lower or away from the trunk as the child gains greater independence in postural control.
• Add Abductor- A Pommel is recommended for children who require medial thigh support due to “scissoring” of “crossing” their legs caused by spasticity of the adductors (hip muscles of the inner thigh). Support to maintain legs in a neutral position can decrease spasticity and improve flexibility of the muscles to prevent contractures and help to maintain the integrity of the hip joint. The Pommel is padded. It is 4in. long and can be adjusted 3in. forward and back by sliding the bracket underneath the School Chair seat.
• Footplate – To ensure a proper seated posture, lower extremity positioning with feet flat on the floor is key to pelvic stability. Pelvic stability is the foundation of the seated posture. A height and depth Adjustable Footplate allows the School Chair to be set at the correct height for use at a non-adjustable table or desk and footplate height can be adjusted to ensure that the user’s feet are resting comfortably on a supportive surface. The Low Footplate sits close to the floor to allow for stand-pivot transfers and has 5 fixed height adjustments. The High Footplate offers more height adjustability when the chair is in use at tall desks or tables and has 7 fixed height adjustments. Please refer to the Size Chart for Seat Height to Adjustable Footplate (High and Low) measurements and overall dimensions of Footplate. Both Footplates come with Foot Straps with curved side release buckles to secure feet to the footplate if needed. The footplate can also be angled by modifying the slots used, to accommodate a plantar flexion contracture or foot deformity. All adjustments are made using pre-drilled holes and a stem bolt with hand tightened knob assembly.
